One of the things I’ve seen in this place (Federal Parliament) is there’s a certain type of politician that when they feel uncomfortable and they know that they’re losing an argument, they just get personal,” 37-year-old Pocock told The Issue.“People just push the actual issue and the substance of it aside and they just start to attack you personally. They know what they’re doing. They have a lot of money. They’re putting huge amounts of money into ads now, running all sorts of editorials, Instagram ads, Facebook ads, don’t listen to it.” Money for hungry mouthsPocock says part of the extra revenue could be spent on supporting food charities, increasing the pension, and for new programs to encourage renters to get solar panels.Foodbank is calling on the Federal Government to release $5 million in funding to help charities feed Australians and says demand for its services is up 6 percent since interest rates rose and the Iran War started.  “I’m hearing from food pantries around the country who are just slammed with more demand,” Pocock says.“We need to be doing all those things at once. Australians are really feeling the crunch now.”Foodbank Australia CEO Kylea Tink says just like households the non-for-profit is being hurt by the oil crisis.“Every dollar that an organisation needs to invest into petrol is a dollar we are not putting into food,” Tink said.“This crisis is a little bit silent. People don’t realise members of their family are choosing not to eat so that they can send their children to school with lunch tomorrow.”Gas industry hits backThe gas lobby says future investments in Australia’s resources sector would be jeopardised if the Albanese Government listened to Senator Pocock, the Greens and Teals.‘This would leave Australia more exposed to future energy shocks’, Australian Energy Producers Chief Executive Samantha McCulloch claims.“The current surging petrol and diesel prices in Australia underscore just how important it is that we ensure Australia remains able to meet its own gas needs through secure domestic supply,” McCulloch says in a statement released in March.“The Australian gas industry is already Australia’s second largest corporate taxpayer, contributing $21.9 billion in taxes and royalties in 2024–25 alone.”Decision for Albo and JimThe final decision rests with the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Treasurer, Jim Chalmers.We won’t have to wait long for their final verdict with next month’s federal budget fast approaching.The Treasurer was asked about the proposal at a press conference in Melbourne on Thursday.“There’s a very wide spectrum of views, and obviously we take those views seriously,” Jim Chalmers told reporters.“We listen respectfully to those ideas and suggestions, and we weigh up a whole range of considerations.“We have already taken some important steps in this regard (by reforming the Petrol Resource Rent Tax) and it shows that the government is serious about getting a fair return.”Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addresses the National Press Club in Canberra, Tuesday, June 10, 2025. Supply depends upon those relationships being adhered to.  “Some of the commentary that is there ignores a whole range of the issues.
