FAQs

What's a fractional share?

Fractional share is, as its name suggests, a fraction of a share that is less than one whole share. So, instead of buying one whole share of a company, you can buy a fraction of a share. This allows beginner investors to buy into companies that may seem out of reach to them at the time of investment. For other investors, fractional share investing is yet another way to diversify their portfolios and add variety to their investments.

Buying fractional shares is a popular way for investing in the US stock market. Via the Tiger Trade app, you can trade fractional shares for constituents of the S&P 500, broad-based index ETFs such as SPY (S&P 500), QQQ (Nasdaq 100) as well as some Chinese ADRs such as BABA (Alibaba), JD (JD.com), PDD (Pinduoduo Inc), etc.

What's the S&P 500?

The Standard and Poor's 500 (or the S&P 500 as it's more commonly known), is an index comprised of around 500 top listed companies in the US. This list of companies includes huge juggernauts such as Apple, Netflix, Amazon, Tesla, Alphabet (Google) and Pfizer.

Can I trade fractional shares during the pre- or post-market hours?

No, fractional shares are only available to be traded during the regular trading session. GTC orders are not supported yet.

Do fractional shares pay dividends?

Yes. You will receive cash dividends proportionate to the percentage of the share you own. For instance, if a shareholder receives a $1 dividend for each share they own and you own a half share, you'll receive $0.50, it's really that simple. Cash dividends will round to the nearest cent for your fractional part.

Can I vote when I own less than one whole share of a stock?

No. You will only have voting right for whole shares.

Which stocks are available for purchase through the Tiger Trade app?

When you see the "Support Fractional Shares" icon on a stock or ETF's info page, you may buy or sell a fractional share of it (e.g. 0.5 share, 1.5 shares).

What's the minimum on how much I can invest in fractional shares?

From USD 1 not inclusive of fees for manual orders, and USD 2 inclusive of fees for Auto-Invest orders.

What order types can I place when trading fractional shares?

Limit orders and market orders are available for buying fractional shares. With limit orders, you need to specify the price and quantity (number of shares)/amount (trade value) that you wish to trade in. For market orders, you cannot specify the price.

What happens to my fractional shares if there is a stock split?

In the case of a stock split, the fractional share part of an increase will be sold and you will receive cash for it. In the case of a reverse stock split, the fractional share part of your holding after the reverse stock split will be sold and you will receive cash for it.
