Alphabet's (GOOGL.US) YouTube announced on Monday that it may remove channels including Fox Broadcasting Network, Fox News, and Fox Sports from its TV streaming platform if it cannot reach an agreement with Fox Corporation (FOX.US).
The YouTube team stated that the renewal deadline between YouTube TV and Fox Corporation is approaching on Wednesday, and despite ongoing negotiations between the two companies, no agreement has been reached yet. The company also sent emails to YouTube TV subscribers informing them of the potential dispute with Fox Corporation.
YouTube wrote in a blog post: "Fox Corporation is demanding compensation far higher than partners providing similar content. Our priority is to reach an agreement that reflects the value of their content and is fair to both parties, without passing additional costs onto our subscribers."
Alphabet indicated that if YouTube cannot reach a new agreement by 5 PM Eastern Time on Wednesday, Fox Corporation channels will be unavailable on YouTube TV. YouTube pays broadcasters like Fox Corporation to carry their channels, and such blackouts could impact advertisers and millions of viewers.
Fox Corporation said in a statement: "While Fox Corporation remains committed to reaching a fair agreement with Google's YouTube TV, we are disappointed by Google's continued use of its outsized leverage to make unreasonable demands that are disconnected from the marketplace."
As viewers increasingly abandon cable television, conflicts between content companies and streaming platforms are intensifying.
In February this year, Paramount notified YouTube TV subscribers that over 20 channels including CBS, BET, Comedy Central, MTV, and Nickelodeon might stop broadcasting if the parties failed to reach an agreement. Shortly thereafter, YouTube TV and Paramount announced a multi-year distribution agreement.
YouTube TV's basic package costs $82.99 per month and includes over 100 live channels plus unlimited cloud DVR storage. YouTube stated that partnerships with content providers like Fox Corporation are a key part of its commitment to users, "enabling us to offer a diverse range of channels."
Alphabet said that if Fox Corporation channels remain off the air for an extended period, YouTube will provide its members with a $10 credit. The company also noted that users can still access Fox Corporation content by subscribing to Fox Corporation's streaming service Fox One.
YouTube recently surpassed Netflix (NFLX.US), which has a market value of $515 billion, to become the streaming platform with the highest viewer engagement. Alphabet has not disclosed official subscriber numbers for YouTube TV, but YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced in a February 2024 letter that the service has over 8 million subscribers. MoffettNathanson chief analyst Michael Nathanson estimates that YouTube TV has approximately 9.4 million paid subscribers.
