JD Wetherspoon was founded in December 1979 when Tim Martin opened his first pub in Muswell Hill, North London. The Company now owns and operates approx 840 pubs (and a few hotels) throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and Tim Martin remains within the Company as Chairman. The Company employs over 26,000 employees, with around 4,000 of these being in management positions. Wetherspoon has won numerous awards for its Training and Development, most recently being awarded the People Development award in the Peach Factory Hero and Icon awards. Previously we have won numerous BII NITA awards, proving that Training and development is top of the agenda in Wetherspoon, with a clear training and career path for every level of employee. Wetherspoon has been named as one of Britain's Top Employers for 2011. It is one of only 58 companies across the UK that has been recognised for achieving the highest standards in the field of human resources management.
