Sunshine Oilsands Q1 2026: Zero Output Drives CAD 20.39 Million Loss, Working-Capital Gap Widens

Bulletin Express
May 14

Sunshine Oilsands Ltd. reported a CAD 20.39 million net loss attributable to shareholders for the three months ended 31 March 2026, nearly doubling the CAD 9.72 million deficit recorded a year earlier. The deterioration stemmed from a complete production shutdown at the West Ells Phase I project, leaving the company without bitumen or dilbit sales during the quarter.

West Ells has been offline since November 2024 for equipment repairs, resulting in average Q1 2026 production of 0 bbl/d and no revenue. Sunshine’s other core asset areas—Muskwa and Godin—also remained non-producing.

Finance costs surged to CAD 13.52 million from CAD 3.11 million, driven primarily by higher interest on senior notes. Operating costs fell to CAD 1.22 million (Q1 2025: CAD 1.88 million) as field activity was curtailed, but the savings were insufficient to offset the revenue shortfall.

The balance sheet continues to show strain: • Working-capital deficiency expanded to CAD 118.10 million (31 December 2025: CAD 99.26 million). • Cash on hand totaled just CAD 0.99 million at quarter-end. • Total assets stood at CAD 736.15 million, while shareholders’ equity was CAD 17.95 million, translating into a debt-to-asset ratio of 98%. • Unsecured debt amounted to CAD 74.80 million; the company also faces ongoing legal disputes over municipal taxes and senior-note obligations.

Capital expenditure was negligible, reflecting the maintenance status of West Ells. Sunshine emphasized that continued operations hinge on securing new financing, refinancing current debt and resuming profitable production.

Management is pursuing diversification initiatives. The company has signed an equity purchase agreement to acquire 51% of Nobao Technology Co. Ltd., a clean-energy business, via share issuance pending shareholder approval. In May 2026, Sunshine’s subsidiary formed a joint venture focused on geothermal heat-pump projects in China’s Yangtze and Pearl River Delta regions.

Despite these efforts, the MD&A reiterates “significant doubt” about Sunshine’s ability to continue as a going concern until production is restarted and funding gaps are addressed.
