Apple says the software situation is improving rapidly.

The company announced on Friday that more than 100,000 apps built specifically for iPhone Duo are now available on the App Store, with thousands of newly optimized apps arriving every day.

Alongside the news, more than a dozen major apps rolled out iPhone Duo compatibility updates, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Zoom, NBA and NHL sports apps, Etsy, LTK shopping software, Goodnotes, Extra productivity tool, and Halide Mark III camera.

Netflix, YouTube, Instagram, and WhatsApp had already completed optimization earlier.

Apps that have not been optimized offer a poorer experience, with black bars appearing along the sides of the screen that eat into display space, and some important features being tucked away inside additional options menus.

Apple's data indicates that many iOS developers need extra time to adapt to this entirely new form factor.

Apple said more than 2,000 developers took part in over 50 offline workshops it held in 19 cities worldwide, where developers could try iPhone Duo hands-on and receive Apple technical support to complete their app overhauls.

Despite iPhone Duo's starting price of $1,999 for the 256GB version, market enthusiasm has exceeded Apple's expectations.

It sold out within hours of pre-orders opening, and device shipping times are now pushed into next year.

On this week's earnings call, Apple said it is still difficult to estimate when the iPhone Duo supply shortage will ease.

Apple Vice President of Worldwide Developer Relations Susan Prescott issued a statement on the milestone of 100,000 optimized apps: "It's exciting to see developers embrace iPhone Duo so quickly, and we thank them for their creativity and innovation. The enthusiasm has been beyond what we imagined, and as more apps complete optimization, we expect the pace of updates and iterations to keep accelerating."
