The Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM) surged 5.01% in pre-market trading on Friday, driven by positive developments in the global memory chip industry that signal easing supply risks and robust demand.
Key memory chip manufacturer Samsung Electronics has entered a critical mediation process with its union over a wage dispute, significantly reducing the near-term risk of a full-scale strike that could have disrupted production of HBM and DRAM memory chips. The labor union has accepted a "post-facto mediation" procedure proposed by the South Korean government, with talks scheduled to resume, marking the first contact between the two sides in 50 days.
Concurrently, an unprecedented move in the sector saw major technology firms offering to directly fund production capacity expansion at rival memory leader SK Hynix, including proposals to invest in new production lines and finance the purchase of expensive lithography equipment. This highlights the intense demand and supply constraints in the AI-driven memory market, as clients seek to secure long-term supply of critical components like high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI servers.
