Chinese shares closed lower Wednesday as index heavyweight Contemporary Amperex Technology or CATL (SHE:300750) saw its stock plummet 12% at the end of day's session.

The Shanghai Composite Index, the main gauge of Chinese stocks, was down 0.6% to 3,713.03. The Shenzhen Component Index fell 0.8% to 11,704.35.

CATL posted 18.9 billion yuan in adjusted net profit attributable to shareholders for the third quarter, up 15% from a year ago.

The battery maker's Q3 net profit rose 14.5% to RMB 21.2 billion-well below analysts' estimate of a 41.2% increase based on LSEG SmartEstimate data and follows a 36.5% rise in the second quarter.

The result marks the company's slowest profit growth in nearly two years, spooking investors and weighing heavily on the broader market given CATL's substantial index weighting.

In other company news, Guangdong Fuxin Technology (SHA:688662) raised the estimated limit of daily related-party transactions for 2026 with Coherent Corp. and its subsidiaries by 29.5 million yuan, lifting the total cap to 114 million yuan. Shares of the semiconductor company closed 8% higher Wednesday.
