Pinterest missed expectations and guided to lower-than-expected revenue for the current quarter, sending its shares sharply lower 7% in overnight trading.
The company reported third-quarter earnings of 46 cents a share and revenue of $1.17 billion. Analysts expected earnings of 49 cents a share and revenue of $1.21 billion. Signs that revenue growth could slow appeared to be weighing on shares.
Overall revenue was up 11.9% from a year ago, and global monthly active users rose 10% to 661 million. The company said it was focused on sharpening its execution and scaling its performance advertising solutions.
It expects fourth-quarter revenue in a range of $1.425 billion to $1.475 billion, which would represent growth of 8% to 12%. But that is below the $1.52 billion expected by analysts.
Pinterest stock fell more than 13% in after-hours trading. It closed down nearly 5% in the regular session after Alphabet's earnings sparked fears about advertising growth.
CEO Bill Ready said the company's AI-driven visual search and shopping experiences "are making Pinterest increasingly valuable for users and advertisers alike."
