Amazon MGM Studios walked away from a biopic on OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman because it didn't match the company's expectations, the studio's head, Mike Hopkins, said Wednesday at the WSJ Tech conference.
"It just didn't quite match our expectations of what it was going to be when we greenlit it," Hopkins, who also heads Amazon's Prime Video group, said of the film, "Artificial." "I think the story, the actual movie, didn't match the ethos of what we thought we were making," he added.
Hopkins said he made the decision to not proceed with the movie, which was directed by Luca Guadagnino, and that Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos was not involved. Amazon is a major investor in OpenAI and sells computing power to the ChatGPT-maker.
Hopkins said a lot of companies "might not have released it at all." The company ultimately decided that "somebody else would do a better job" at bringing the film to market. Amazon MGM sold the biopic to another studio, Neon, in June.
"Artificial" is slated to be released in select U.S. theaters on Christmas Day.
