Microsoft-Backed OpenAI Pledges No NDAs for Data Center Deals, Promises Residents Won't Pay Power Costs

Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI said Thursday it will avoid nondisclosure agreements in data center negotiations and ensure local residents don't pay electricity costs associated with its projects under a new community framework.

The AI company's National Community Compact also commits to disclosing potential noise, water and energy impacts, reducing electricity consumption during peak demand, returning power to the grid and setting local hiring goals.

OpenAI said it will provide financial assurances before major spending begins to protect other utility customers if a project is delayed, scaled back or canceled.

The company also pledged to develop site-specific water plans, prioritize low-water cooling systems and reduce electricity demand when grid capacity is constrained.

OpenAI said it will publicly report progress on the commitments, which could eventually be incorporated into laws governing AI infrastructure expansion.
