At around 6 a.m. on December 12, despite the freezing dawn, excitement filled the air at the Shenjiazhai Bus Terminal, the endpoint of Route 37, where firecrackers and gleaming new buses drew a crowd. That day, 52 pure electric buses were dispatched across the city, entering service on six routes to provide Xining residents with more comfortable, convenient, and efficient green transportation while enhancing public transit service quality.
The city's pure electric bus fleet will soon achieve 100% coverage. As a vital public service, urban buses impact countless households and contribute to broader social welfare. In recent years, the municipal government has prioritized the development of public transit, steadily supporting fleet upgrades in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023, and 2024.
This year’s update includes 450 new buses from three brands and models, tailored to meet diverse route demands—mainlines, trunk lines, and branch lines. The first batch of 52 buses has already been deployed on Routes 8, 23, 28, 37, 39, and 80, optimizing Xining’s bus fleet structure. Once all 450 buses are operational, the city’s pure electric bus ratio will hit 100%, boosting efficiency, comfort, and sustainability while supporting Xining’s green, low-carbon development.
**Aesthetic and Functional Upgrades** The new buses stand out with their 8.5-meter-long green bodies adorned with snow leopard motifs, including the "Snow Leopard Capital" logo and its mascot, Ningmeng. These designs aim to elevate Xining’s branding as the "Snow Leopard Capital."
"The snow leopard elements were custom-designed by manufacturers to showcase Xining’s charm," explained a Xining Bus Group representative. "Ningmeng, with its welcoming pose, greets passengers from the rear or side of each bus, turning them into mobile ambassadors for the city."
Beyond aesthetics, the buses boast advanced technology. Each is equipped with a 5G-enabled cockpit, AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking), and memory-adjustable driver seats to reduce fatigue. Safety features include three fire extinguishers, multiple cameras, and passenger flow monitors for real-time data analysis.
Accessibility is also prioritized, with low-floor boarding, wheelchair spaces, and seatbelts enhancing comfort for elderly and disabled passengers.
"The new pure electric buses will redefine Xining’s public transit as safer, greener, and smarter," said a Xining Bus Group official. "The remaining 398 buses will be delivered and deployed this month, further strengthening the city’s transport network."
