Gansu Section of Gansu-Zhejiang UHV Project Fully Connected, Spanning the Yellow River to Power a Green Energy Corridor

On September 14th, at the border between Jingtai County and Jingyuan County in Baiyin City, Gansu Province, the Gansu-Zhejiang ±800 kV Ultra-High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) transmission project successfully completed its line-stringing operation across the Yellow River, marking the full connection of the Gansu section of the "Gansu Power to Zhejiang" initiative.

As a key project in the national power plan, the "Gansu Power to Zhejiang" initiative stretches from the Wuwei Converter Station in Gansu in the west to the Yuezhou Converter Station in Shaoxing, Zhejiang in the east. The total line length is 2,370 kilometers, traversing six provinces and regions: Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Henan, Anhui, and Zhejiang, with a transmission capacity of 8,000 megawatts.

This is also the world's first UHV project that employs flexible DC technology at both the sending and receiving ends, enabling flexible regulation of current and adapting to the integration needs of large-scale new energy sources. Currently, the converter stations at both ends are under accelerated construction, with the Wuwei Converter Station undergoing concentrated installation of core electrical equipment as multiple installation and commissioning tasks proceed in an orderly manner.

The project is expected to be put into operation in 2027. Once operational, Gansu will be able to transmit over 36 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to Zhejiang annually, of which more than 21.2 billion kilowatt-hours will come from new energy sources. This is equivalent to reducing coal consumption by 6.4 million tons and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 17 million tons.

Upon completion, this electricity "high-speed channel" will continuously deliver abundant wind and solar new energy from the Hexi region to the eastern load centers, facilitating the conversion of western new energy resources, supporting green and low-carbon development in the east, and providing solid power support for the coordinated energy development between the east and west and the achievement of the national "dual carbon" goals.
