According to sources familiar with the matter, Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US) is planning to launch its first consumer-focused smart glasses equipped with a display screen and gesture control via an accompanying wristband. The sources indicate that this device will be officially unveiled next month at Meta's annual Connect conference, which primarily focuses on virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and metaverse technologies.
The smart glasses, internally codenamed "Hypernova," will feature a small digital display embedded in the right lens. This color display will provide approximately 20 degrees of field of view and will primarily be used to show notifications such as text messages. The glasses are reportedly priced at around $800, with the accompanying wristband utilizing surface electromyography (sEMG) sensor technology to detect and interpret electrical signals generated by hand movements.
The new product will be sold through Meta's partnership with EssilorLuxottica (ESLOY.US). While the specific brand has not been confirmed, reports suggest that both companies had planned to launch a Prada (01913) co-branded smart glasses line. Prada's thick-framed eyewear structure would be well-suited to accommodate Hypernova's hardware configuration.
According to a letter dated July 23 from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to Meta's representative attorneys, this device will enable users to "capture photos and videos in various formats, make video calls, send and receive messages, play audio, and interact with AI assistants through multiple interaction methods including voice, display screen, and manual operations." This letter was part of the standard process for determining product origin, and sources confirmed that the description in the letter specifically refers to the Hypernova product.
