CNA Financial Corp's stock plummeted 5.12% during intraday trading on Monday, following the release of its first-quarter 2026 financial results that fell short of analyst expectations.

The company reported core earnings per share of $0.83, a significant decline from $1.03 in the same period last year and below the FactSet consensus estimate of $1.30. Net income dropped 23% year-over-year to $211 million, while revenue saw a modest 1% increase to $3.68 billion.

The earnings weakness was primarily driven by poorer underwriting performance in the Property & Casualty segments, where the combined ratio worsened to 102.2% from 98.4% a year earlier. Management cited lower underlying underwriting results and unfavorable net prior year loss reserve development, particularly in excess casualty and professional errors & omissions lines, as key factors weighing on results. These issues were only partially offset by higher net investment income.
