On December 3, multiple social media posts revealed that a course consultant at New Oriental Education & Technology Group (09901.HK, EDU) in Hangzhou had shared a lengthy internal message criticizing the company’s work conditions. Titled *"Don’t Let Educational Passion Fade in Chaotic Overtime,"* the post highlighted issues such as excessive overtime, unrealistic performance targets, and disorganized workloads.
The employee referenced a recent email from Yu Minhong, New Oriental’s founder, who emphasized the company’s commitment to educational values and employee welfare during his Antarctic expedition. However, the consultant contrasted this ideal with their daily reality: recurring "996" schedules (9 a.m.–9 p.m., six days a week), frequent last-minute task changes, and unpaid overtime.
Key grievances included: - Performance targets far exceeding realistic expectations. - Institutionalized unpaid overtime. - Constant disruptions to planned workflows. - Erosion of legally mandated breaks and 8-hour workday protections.
The post concluded with a plea for management to address these concerns, stressing a desire to contribute meaningfully without being drained by unsustainable demands.
Shortly after circulation, the message was deleted, and the employee’s account was reportedly suspended. When contacted, a Hangzhou New Oriental representative confirmed the incident, stating the post violated internal reporting protocols and would be handled by designated personnel.
