Sector performance: Samsung's earnings miss rattles Korean markets

A significant earnings "expectation gap" from Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. triggered a sharp selloff in Korean equities, with related leveraged ETFs taking a heavy hit. By the close, the CSOP Samsung Electronics Daily (2x) Leveraged Product (07747) had plunged 17.58% to HK$72.84, while the CSOP SK Hynix Daily (2x) Leveraged Product (07709) fell 7.42% to HK$36.7. The Korean stock market opened lower and never recovered, with the KOSPI index closing down 3.12% at 6,696.96 points. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. shares tumbled 8.7% on the day.

The tech giant announced plans to return up to 110 trillion Korean won (approximately US$80 billion) to shareholders this year, with 30 trillion won earmarked for cash dividends in the third quarter. The remaining shareholder return measures are slated to be finalized at a board meeting in January. JPMorgan analyst Jay Kwon noted that the market was disappointed by the specific third-quarter commitment amount, the absence of a share buyback program, and the decision to keep the shareholder return ratio unchanged at 50% of cumulative free cash flow.

Coal and dividend value ETFs chart an independent course amid market turbulence

As market volatility intensified, coal and high-dividend value ETFs defied the broader downtrend. The Guotai Coal ETF (515220.SH) advanced 2.43% to RMB 1.308, while the E Fund Dividend Value ETF (563700.SH) gained 2.17% to RMB 1.082. According to Kaiyuan Securities, both thermal coal and coking coal prices remain at historical lows, providing room for a rebound. Additionally, many coal companies have maintained a strong inclination toward high dividend payouts, with six listed coal firms announcing interim dividend plans in their mid-year reports, including China Shenhua, Shanxi Coking Coal, Shaanxi Coal, Shanghai Energy, Yankuang Energy, and China Coal Energy.

Given the highly uncertain global political and economic landscape alongside domestic economic stabilization efforts, capital markets are experiencing sentiment-driven fluctuations. The coal sector offers dual characteristics of cyclicality and dividend appeal, and with current positioning at historic lows, the fundamental inflection point appears to be on the right side of the turn.

US debt concerns reignite 'currency debasement trade,' lifting gold ETFs

Gold ETFs rallied as renewed worries over US debt sustainability fueled safe-haven demand. The Bosera Gold ETF (159937.SZ) rose 1.97% to RMB 9.542, while the Harvest Gold ETF (159831.SZ) gained 1.96% to RMB 9.656. The US Treasury's buyback of long-dated bonds reflects growing concerns about the sustainability of the government's debt servicing capacity and fiscal position, with spot gold surging more than 5% last week.

Bridgewater Associates founder and billionaire investor Ray Dalio has issued a warning that a US debt crisis could erupt within as little as three years, advising investors to reduce bond holdings and allocate 10% to 15% of their portfolios to gold. Meanwhile, a recent Goldman Sachs report indicates that macro funds accelerated gold purchases last week, with trading concentrated in 3-to-6-month digital options and direct spot purchases, betting on gold prices rising to between US$4,800 and US$5,500.

Institutional perspectives

CITIC Securities argues that the recent correction in technology stocks cannot be simply attributed to elevated US long-term bond yields. The adjustment stems from forward-pricing concerns surrounding AI-related equities, with three key narrative variables at play: whether the pace and scope of commercialization can keep up with market expectations; whether computing power advantages translate into market share and pricing power; and whether current computational gaps will significantly widen future AI model disparities. The prevailing consensus worry centers on the speed and breadth of commercialization, while the biggest potential variable is whether "distillation prevention" measures will once again widen model gaps in the future.

China Great Wall Fund has previously suggested that defensive assets such as high-dividend stocks, energy, and banks retain significant allocation value during periods of rising external uncertainty. On the technology front, investors could consider accumulating positions during pullbacks rather than chasing rallies at sentiment peaks. Key focus areas include oil and petrochemicals, coal, and banking sectors, which combine energy security attributes with high dividend value. The core logic lies in stable cash flows from companies amid mid-to-high oil price ranges, coupled with strong defensive characteristics stemming from low valuations.
