Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Apple Inc. are integrating generative AI features for music into their core consumer applications, highlighting the advancement of sophisticated AI tools into mainstream use.

Google announced in a blog post on Wednesday that its Gemini AI assistant can now generate 30-second music tracks using Google DeepMind's latest Lyria 3 model, based on text, photos, or videos uploaded by users. The feature can produce customized lyrics or instrumental audio and will be available to users aged 18 and above, supporting multiple languages. Google stated that the new functionality will debut on the Gemini desktop version and roll out to mobile applications in the coming days.

Google also mentioned that its popular image generation model, Nano Banana, will create custom covers for music compositions, adding visual elements when users share track links.

Integrating audio creation tools into mobile applications is expected to enhance Google's competitiveness against OpenAI's ChatGPT. The Gemini 3 model, launched by Google last November, received widespread acclaim from investors and users, prompting OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to sound a "red alert" and accelerate ChatGPT's development.

Simultaneously, Apple announced this week that users will soon be able to use AI to create playlists in Apple Music. The feature, called "Playlist Playground," utilizes Apple Intelligence to convert text prompts into playlists that include cover art, descriptions, and 25 songs. This functionality is part of the iOS 26.4 beta released on Monday and will see a broader rollout this spring. Apple Music's new feature will compete with similar offerings from Spotify Technology SA.
