OpenAI Signals Willingness to Decelerate Frontier AI Development

OpenAI is exploring the possibility of slowing the pace of cutting-edge artificial intelligence development, with its chief executive officer Sam Altman encouraging other AI firms to adopt a similar approach. According to several individuals familiar with the matter who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions, Altman told employees during an all-hands meeting this week that the company may adjust the speed of its AI research and could potentially coordinate such a slowdown with several other AI laboratories, though some organizations may be reluctant to participate.

In recent weeks, employees at leading AI companies have publicly voiced growing concerns over the escalating risks associated with advanced AI systems, intensifying internal unease within the industry. OpenAI and its competitor Anthropic PBC have both submitted confidential filings earlier this year in preparation for potential public listings. OpenAI declined to comment on the matter.

Meanwhile, the company's chief scientist Jakub Pachocki recently issued a warning regarding the dangers posed by AI, stating his belief that all AI enterprises should "collaboratively decelerate subsequent research and development efforts as necessary." Pachocki also expressed hope that "voluntary slowdowns in research and development could become widespread practice before unified safety standards are established."
