Omdia Predicts Apple's Entry Will Ignite Foldable Phone Market Explosion

Deep News
Aug 20, 2025

London-based research firm Omdia forecasts that global foldable OLED screen shipments will reach 124.6 million units by 2032, accounting for 8.6% of the overall OLED market. This represents a significant increase from 23.1 million units in 2024 and the projected 23.5 million units in 2025.

The related forecast data shows that while growth in 2025 will be limited, it will lay the foundation for subsequent explosive growth. Over the next 8 years (from 2024 to 2032), foldable phone shipment volumes are expected to surge five-fold as new models continue to emerge and drive market expansion.

The report notes that manufacturers including Samsung, Google, and vivo are continuously upgrading their products, gradually addressing issues such as device thickness, hinge mechanisms, and battery life. However, pricing and consumer habits remain major barriers. Taking Samsung's Galaxy Fold 7 as an example, while it excels in hinge design and battery performance, market acceptance still requires time to improve.

Industry experts widely believe that if Apple launches its own foldable phone, it will dramatically reshape the industry landscape. Apple has consistently prioritized product maturity and is reportedly working to overcome technical challenges including screen creasing, hinge durability, and battery life.

Omdia expert Jerry Kang stated that Apple's market entry will "legitimize the foldable screen category" and trigger a new wave of demand that surpasses the Android ecosystem.

Omdia expects 2026 to become a turning point for the foldable device market. With continued technological advancement and increased manufacturer participation, foldable phones are poised to evolve from niche products to mainstream options. Apple's participation will not only drive innovation but may also promote gradual adjustments to pricing structures, attracting more consumers to try new form factor devices.
