U.S. Treasury Secretary Foresees Economic Growth Exceeding 3% This Year

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Tuesday that, despite the impact of the U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict, the fundamentals of the U.S. economy remain robust, and the economic growth rate for this year could still surpass 3% or even 3.5%.

Bessent expressed that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank's decisions to lower global economic growth forecasts and raise inflation expectations were an overreaction. The IMF revised its growth projections downward on Tuesday, citing soaring energy prices resulting from the Iran conflict.

"I believe the economic fundamentals are still strong," Bessent remarked during a live event in Washington.

"I do think it's quite possible for economic growth to exceed 3% this year, potentially even reaching 3.5%."

Bessent also commented on U.S. tariffs imposed on other nations, suggesting that by July, these tariffs might revert to previous levels. This follows a Supreme Court ruling in February that found former President Trump had overstepped his authority by imposing broad global tariffs under emergency laws.

"By early July, tariffs could return to their prior levels," he said, referring to measures being taken by the Trump administration, such as investigations under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
