XPENG Renews Bid to Capture Family-Oriented Buyers

XPENG is once again targeting the family SUV market.

On the evening of August 11, XPENG launched presales for the G9L, with a starting price of RMB 259,800. XPENG Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng stated that the "L" in G9L stands for "Large," and that the overall interior space of the G9L surpasses that of the G9.

This shift is first evident in the product's definition.

When the G9 was initially launched, XPENG's messaging for its flagship SUV focused heavily on 800V architecture, ultra-fast charging, and intelligent driving. With the G9L, these technologies are retained, but space, comfort, and family travel are now positioned as higher priorities.

The G9L is positioned as a large five-seat SUV, with a length of 5,120 mm and a wheelbase of 3,100 mm. Although its dimensions enter the large SUV segment, XPENG has chosen not to add a third row, instead sticking with five seats to allocate more space to the second row and the trunk. For family users, the product prioritizes second-row seating comfort and cargo capacity. To cater to family use, the new vehicle adds features such as a rear-seat entertainment screen, a dual-zone refrigerator, and a center console island.

This change also extends to the product development level.

Public information shows that the new vehicle is developed on a new G platform, sharing its technical architecture with the six-seat flagship SUV GX, while the current G9 uses a different platform. He Xiaopeng revealed that the G9L project was initiated three years ago, with cumulative testing mileage exceeding 6.74 million kilometers across 26 countries and regions.

The powertrain options have also been broadened, meaning family users are no longer limited to a single energy type. The G9L will be offered in both all-electric and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) versions. The all-electric version boasts a CLTC range of up to 755 km, while the EREV version offers a CLTC electric-only range of up to 435 km and a combined range of up to 1,602 km. Both powertrain options utilize an 800V high-voltage platform and 5C ultra-fast charging batteries. The new car also comes standard with rear-wheel steering and is equipped with the upgraded second-generation VLA (Vision Language Action) system.

Adding an EREV option alongside the pure EV is a crucial product choice for the G9L's entry into the family market, addressing the range anxiety and charging concerns associated with long-distance travel. Family SUV users typically have longer travel ranges and are more sensitive to the convenience of long-distance charging. In recent years, brands like Li Auto and AITO have built significant scale in the mid-to-high-end SUV market by relying on the EREV route, making this powertrain an increasingly important option in this segment.

Beyond powertrain choices, seat layout is also becoming a key battleground in the new energy SUV market.

From the Li L7 and AITO M7 to the growing number of large five-seat models launched by domestic brands, product density in the RMB 250,000 to RMB 350,000 market is continuously increasing. Space, comfort, range, and intelligence are no longer sufficient to form a defensible moat on their own; automakers must now address all these demands simultaneously. With a starting presale price of RMB 259,800, the G9L enters this competitive arena directly.

For XPENG, the G9L also serves the purpose of filling a gap in its mid-to-high-end SUV product lineup. As models like the MONA M03 expand the sales base, XPENG's product coverage is extending to a wider price range. The G9L and the GX are responsible for the mid-to-high-end product layout. The former adheres to a large five-seat configuration, while the latter adopts a six-seat layout, with the two models catering to different family needs.

At the launch event, He Xiaopeng expressed the hope that the G9L would become one of the best large five-seat SUVs in the RMB 300,000 class. This still needs validation from the market. This time, XPENG has not simply repeated the approach of emphasizing technical parameters as it did with its previous flagship SUV. Instead, it is trying to integrate its existing capabilities, such as 800V architecture and intelligent driving, into more specific family usage scenarios.

This is also a microcosm of the current competition in the mid-to-high-end new energy SUV market.

As technologies like intelligence and fast charging become common features across more vehicle models, the focus of competition among automakers is shifting from a comparison of individual technologies to how well space, powertrain, and technology can collectively serve the needs of family use. The number of orders the G9L can secure will be a test of the market's acceptance of XPENG's large five-seat strategy.
