The eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday period is drawing to a close, and Mafengwo's big data reveals that tourists' demand for long-distance and outbound travel was fully released during the extended break. Family travelers with children led the holiday travel surge, accounting for nearly 52.4% of all travelers. In terms of transportation choices, high-speed rail became the most favored public transit option due to its convenience and price stability, with domestic railway passenger volume reaching new records. Destinations within the "three-hour high-speed rail circle" around major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Chongqing became flexible travel targets for tourists.
Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Xi'an, Shenzhen, Nanjing, and Wuhan ranked as the top ten most popular domestic city destinations during the National Day holiday. Beijing, already a high-popularity destination, reached even greater heights with the boost from sporting events such as the World Table Tennis (WTT) China Grand Slam and China Open tennis tournament, as well as the Palace Museum's centennial exhibition featuring national treasures like "Along the River During the Qingming Festival." This made Beijing the undisputed top choice for sports and culture enthusiasts during the holiday, with Shougang Park, the WTT venue, seeing a 460% month-over-month increase in popularity.
The Sichuan-Chongqing region, well-equipped with natural scenery, cultural heritage, and cuisine, continued to demonstrate strong appeal during the holiday, with Chengdu and Chongqing ranking third and fourth among popular cities respectively. Top autumn viewing destinations Siguniang Mountain and Guangwu Mountain claimed the top two spots among popular scenic areas in Sichuan, with Guangwu Mountain experiencing a 175% week-over-week surge in popularity. Bingpengou and Jiuzhaigou also made it into the top ten. The recently opened Jiu-Mian Expressway, which connects Jiuzhaigou, Pingwu, Beichuan, and Jiangyou, drove collective popularity surges for scenic spots along the route, with the Li Bai Memorial Hall in Jiangyou seeing a dramatic 483% increase in popularity. Thousands of music, cultural, folk, and intangible cultural heritage activities, including the Guangzhou Super Strawberry Music Festival, China International Comics Festival Animation and Gaming Exhibition, and Baiyun Fire Dragon Folk Culture Festival, attracted large numbers of young tourists, propelling Guangzhou into the top five popular cities.
Cultural experiences have evolved from being mere "seasonings" in past travels to essential components of modern tourism. Domestic destinations and scenic areas successfully captured tourists' attention during the National Day holiday through rich and diverse intangible cultural heritage experiences. The Intangible Cultural Heritage Performance Carnival featuring 300 daily performances boosted the popularity of Kaifeng's Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden in Henan by 88%. Shenzhen Yantian Xiaomeisha Ocean World brought the national-level intangible cultural heritage Shatou Jiao Fish Lantern Dance into underwater display tanks, providing visitors with immersive national culture experiences. Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park's night-exclusive "Intangible Heritage Bench Dragon" and "Fireworks Spectacular" became new nighttime tourist attractions.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of China's victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Major red culture scenic areas attracted numerous visitors to commemorate martyrs and learn about history through immersive exhibitions, red-themed activities, and historical storytelling. The newly opened "world's highest bridge," Huajiang Canyon Bridge, attracted countless tourists to experience the awe-inspiring achievement of China's infrastructure prowess, driving the popularity of Huajiang Village's red cultural heritage sites to surge by over 1000%, making it the red-themed scenic area with the highest popularity growth during the National Day holiday. Other red tourism sites including Mianyang's Two Bombs and One Satellite Base, Yan'an 1938 Cultural District, Orange Isle, Jiaxing South Lake, Luding Bridge, Zunyi Conference Site, Red Flag Canal, Jinggangshan, and the Former Site of Whampoa Military Academy Memorial Hall followed closely behind.
Outbound travel also reached its peak during this extended holiday, with Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, New Zealand, Australia, Turkey, Egypt, and Indonesia ranking as the top ten popular destination countries. Mafengwo's previously launched "AI Travel Assistant" app, along with AI restaurant booking and AI conversation translation features, became practical tools for exploring Japan, with usage showing significant growth during the National Day period.
