Lei Jun Fires Back on Weibo Over Xiaomi Car Safety Concerns

Amid growing online skepticism about the safety of Xiaomi's electric vehicles, CEO Lei Jun took to Weibo to defend the company's design philosophy.

On November 16, Lei posted multiple Weibo messages reiterating Xiaomi's commitment to vehicle safety. He referenced a 2023 interview where he stated, "A car’s aesthetics come first," clarifying that this does not contradict the principle that "safety is the foundation and prerequisite." He also questioned criticisms over his past remarks on wheel design challenges.

Lei shared four Weibo posts from 2023 and 2024, emphasizing his long-standing stance on safety standards during the development of the Xiaomi SU7. Notably, he has repeatedly stressed that "safety comes above all else."

Some netizens defended Lei, arguing that his earlier comments were taken out of context. One user noted, "Many misrepresent his words, claiming Xiaomi prioritizes looks over safety." Lei responded, "Safety is the foundation and prerequisite."

Another commenter remarked, "No matter what you say, they’ll twist it—it’s clearly targeted." Lei replied, "Many online deliberately distort and smear."

The debate highlights heightened scrutiny as Xiaomi expands into the competitive EV market.
