From Traditional Methods to Technological Innovation: Fushun, Sichuan Drives Green Transformation of Sericulture Industry

The modern grain-mulberry agricultural park in Yinshexi, Zhaohua Town, Fushun County, presents a verdant expanse of 5,800 acres of standardized mulberry gardens during the summer. High-quality mulberry varieties like Qiangsang No. 1 and Nongsang No. 14 stand tall with sturdy trunks and lush leaves, forming a sea of green that ripples in the breeze. Villagers, carrying baskets, bend to pick the fresh mulberry leaves, their fingers moving swiftly to fill the containers.

In recent years, leveraging its strategy of "building clusters and strengthening supply chains," Fushun County has played three key cards: green cultivation, circular utilization, and ecological benefits for residents. This approach is propelling the local sericulture industry towards greener, more standardized, and efficient practices, carving out a distinctive path for green transformation in hilly regions. The lush mulberry gardens and abundant cocoons are weaving a "chain of ecological prosperity."

There was a time when Fushun's sericulture industry was mired in challenges: scattered small-scale farming by individual households, limited scale, weak risk resistance, and low profitability. To tackle issues like high-quality cocoons failing to fetch good prices and significant losses during storage and transportation, the county has actively promoted a shift in sericulture from "relying on experience" to "relying on technology," achieving an industrial transformation characterized by "base renovation + technology delivery."

So, how was this transformation achieved? Fushun first focused on upgrading cultivation and rearing technologies. To elevate traditional practices to new standards of standardization and efficiency, the county formulated a three-year action plan for building clusters and strengthening the sericulture supply chain, offering policy support from mulberry seedling introduction to silkworm rearing facility construction. Fushun collaborated with the Sericulture Research Institute of the Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences to establish an "expert service station," promoting new ecological and efficient varieties alongside green cultivation technologies, and building a technology dissemination chain involving "technical experts, cooperative breeding households, and silkworm farmers."

In the mulberry fields, agricultural technicians act as "field nannies," providing full-process follow-up on fertilization, weeding, and silkworm rearing management, delivering technical guidance directly to farmers. Since 2025, the county has renovated 2,000 acres of sericulture bases and constructed 12,000 square meters of standardized silkworm rearing sheds, accelerating the shift towards greener production methods. To date, spring cocoon production has reached 650 tons, a 15% year-on-year increase.

While strictly safeguarding food security, the local area has also innovated with models like the "822" grain-mulberry intercropping and "711" grain-economic crop composite systems. Soybeans and mustard tubers are planted between the wide rows of mulberry trees, achieving "dual harvests from one plot and mutual benefit for grain and mulberry," generating approximately 10,000 yuan in additional income per mu and increasing average output value per mu by 15% compared to traditional models.

Building on the advantages of the provincial three-star Yinshexi Grain-Mulberry Modern Agricultural Park, Fushun County is also actively attracting and nurturing leading enterprises in the sericulture sector. It has implemented projects like the Chongqing Shuanghe Silk Reeling Factory, investing 2.2 million yuan to establish a cocoon drying center, trading center, agricultural service center, and mulberry branch processing center. This promotes industrial quality enhancement through green circular practices, processing tens of thousands of tons of mulberry branches into organic fuel, forming a green circular chain. Furthermore, using projects as a lever, it is exploring the development of agritourism initiatives such as mulberry garden tours and mulberry fruit picking.

The ultimate goal of industrial revitalization is enriching the people. To ensure farmers benefit, Fushun County implements guaranteed purchase agreements, setting a base price of 40 yuan per kilogram to safeguard farmer income. It also tailors differentiated benefit distribution models according to local conditions, such as "enterprise 60%, village collective 30%, group collective 10%" or "village collective 50%, farmers 40%, group collective 10%," ensuring value-added profits are redistributed to benefit the community and precisely delivering the dividends of industrial development.

It is noteworthy that Fushun strictly enforces a "quality-based cocoon assessment" model, cracking down on practices like downgrading prices and adulteration to maintain a fair and orderly market environment, ensuring high-quality cocoons command high prices based on merit. Reports indicate that this year, a total of 19,969 sheets of silkworm eggs have been distributed, an increase of 1,176 sheets year-on-year. The purchase price ranges from 50 to 55 yuan per kilogram, with stable earnings of about 2,000 yuan per sheet of silkworm eggs, achieving a win-win situation for both ecological and economic benefits.
