The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the marketing of fruit-flavored e-cigarettes on Tuesday, marking the agency's first authorization of non-tobacco flavored vaping products, as it faces increasing political pressure.
The FDA stated that the approved products come from Los Angeles-based Glas—a small e-cigarette manufacturer that uses age-verification technology for its devices. The authorized e-liquid flavors include Classic Menthol, Fresh Menthol, Gold, and Sapphire.
The regulatory agency said, "The FDA conducted a rigorous, scientific review of these products and found that the applicant sufficiently demonstrated that Glas's device access restriction technology, combined with FDA-mandated marketing restrictions, is likely to effectively reduce youth usage."
Earlier that day, media reports indicated that President Donald Trump criticized FDA Commissioner Marty Makary over the weekend, accusing him of not moving quickly enough to approve flavored e-cigarettes and nicotine products.
US regulators have previously avoided granting licenses for flavored e-cigarettes. The FDA had stated that for flavors particularly appealing to youth—such as fruit or candy flavors—it would continue to require substantial evidence demonstrating benefits for adult smokers.
However, earlier this year, the agency adjusted its strict stance on flavored e-cigarettes. This shift came amid growing lobbying efforts from the tobacco industry and political pressure to allow more products on the market.
With this latest decision, the FDA has now approved 45 e-cigarette products for sale in the United States.
