The humanoid robotics pioneer UBTECH ROBOTICS (9880.HK) is making headlines with a global recruitment drive for a Chief Scientist in Embodied AI, offering an unprecedented annual salary ranging from 15 million to 124 million yuan. This compensation package has sparked widespread discussion among professionals.
However, beyond the staggering figures, the timing of this announcement is noteworthy. On March 31, UBTECH released its 2025 annual report, revealing a 358-fold surge in humanoid robot sales and a 22-fold increase in related revenue. The company's stock price rose nearly 20% over the next two trading days. The recruitment notice was published after market close on April 2, just before a five-day holiday closure in Hong Kong. When trading resumed on April 8, UBTECH's shares gained another 5.88%, continuing their upward trend.
Despite remarkable revenue growth, UBTECH reported a net loss of 790 million yuan for 2025. Although this represents an improvement from the 1.16 billion yuan loss in 2024, the company has accumulated losses totaling 4.123 billion yuan over the past four years. Operating cash flow remained negative at 784 million yuan outflow in 2025.
Since its IPO in December 2023, UBTECH has conducted six secondary share placements, raising approximately 87 billion Hong Kong dollars in total. The most recent placement in November 2025 raised 3.109 billion HKD, with 75% earmarked for mergers and acquisitions across the industrial chain.
Industry observers note that while the recruitment drive signals ambitious technological aspirations, it raises questions about strategic positioning. With competitors like Tesla's Optimus and domestic players including Yushu Technology advancing rapidly, UBTECH must demonstrate distinct technological advantages. Some analysts caution that such high-profile hiring could backfire if it fails to translate quickly into marketable products.
Yushu Technology, currently pursuing a科创板 IPO, reported 1.708 billion yuan in revenue and approximately 600 million yuan in net profit for 2025, positioning it as a profitable contender in the humanoid robotics race. As competition intensifies, UBTECH's window for establishing market leadership may be narrowing.
