Beat the Summer Heat: How This "Embedded" Senior Care Model Keeps the Elderly Cool and Safe

Deep News
Aug 06

To truly meet the needs of seniors for cooling off, dining, health maintenance, and leisure during the summer, Caojiadu Subdistrict has deepened its "embedded" senior care model right on the doorstep. By focusing on meticulous micro-services, caring support is delivered directly to the building entrances and just outside the seniors' doors. This approach bridges the "last mile" of elderly care, ensuring seniors can enjoy reliable support without leaving their residential complex, effectively creating a "cooling umbrella" for their twilight years.

"I'm old and afraid of the heat, so I don't dare go out. Many small tasks are too much for me to handle on my own. Now, having a Happy Ageing service point right downstairs, I feel so much more secure," many seniors have expressed with gratitude. Since the start of this summer, the seven Happy Ageing service points in Caojiadu Subdistrict have held 32 special summer care events, serving over 9,400 elderly residents. This includes more than 5,000 seniors who live alone, are of advanced age, have disabilities, or are in extreme poverty, using precise services to warm their later years.

Summer Meal Micro-Services: Protecting Cool and Delicious Dining

The sweltering summer heat makes it difficult for the elderly to cook, often leading them to skip meals or eat poorly. In response, the subdistrict's Happy Ageing service points have optimized their summer meal services. The menus feature light, low-oil, seasonal dishes designed to clear heat and relieve summer heat, perfectly suited to the dietary needs of the elderly. They offer comfortable dine-in services, with staff bringing meals to the tables, as well as home delivery. Staff also offer caring reminders about heat prevention. In July alone, over 8,900 meal services were provided, with more than 5,900 delivered to homes. "The kitchen is like a steamer during the hottest days. I'm too old to cook and often just eat leftovers. Now, the meals at the Happy Ageing point are light and tasty, with cooling soups. It's a real solution to our problem!" said 82-year-old Grandma Zhang, who lives alone, echoing the sentiments of many. This thoughtful meal service effectively safeguards the seniors' health and well-being during the summer.

Health Guardian Micro-Services: Building a Strong Health Defense Line

Summer is a peak season for high blood pressure, heatstroke, and gastrointestinal illnesses, increasing the risk of health incidents for the elderly. Focusing on the health needs of seniors during the hot weather, the subdistrict regularly provides doorstep health check-ups and health education services. These include measuring blood pressure and checking vital signs, as well as offering advice on heat prevention, daily routines, and diet. For seniors with limited mobility, personalized services like home visits, medication collection, and companion clinic visits are also available. A total of 16 health events have been held this summer, along with 23 home health service visits. "I have high blood pressure all year round, and it gets unstable in the summer. I'm afraid to go out for a check-up because of the heat. Now I can get my blood pressure checked for free right at my doorstep. Volunteers regularly remind me to take my medicine on time and use the air conditioner wisely. It's so thoughtful and reassuring," said 76-year-old Grandpa Li, who lives alone. These doorstep health micro-services have built a solid safety barrier for the seniors' summer health and well-being.

Convenient & Heartwarming Micro-Services: Attending to Life's Little Details

Based on the concept of doorstep care, the subdistrict's Happy Ageing service points focus on the practical daily needs of the elderly. Key services include foot care and haircuts, alongside cultural activities like reading books and newspapers, allowing seniors to handle daily chores and enrich their spiritual lives without leaving their homes. During the hot weather, staff and community volunteers regularly conduct home visits to check on seniors living alone or in extreme poverty. They carefully inquire about their health and living needs, and deliver "summer care packages" to bring them comfort and relief. Over 5,800 such home visits have been made so far. Additionally, staff provide one-on-one guidance on using smart devices and educate seniors about anti-fraud measures, ensuring these heartwarming services are truly effective, making elderly care more personal and grounded.

Recreation & Companionship Micro-Services: Enjoying a Leisurely Silver Age

The high temperatures limit outdoor activities for the elderly, often leading to feelings of isolation and boredom at home. The Happy Ageing service points keep their cool, comfortable activity and reading rooms open all day, equipped with drinking water, mosquito repellent, and emergency supplies. These spaces have become happy havens for seniors to escape the heat, socialize, and meet neighbours. The service points also organize activities like movie screenings, board games, handicraft sessions, and health-themed tea parties during cooler hours. This rich variety of recreational companionship adds a vibrant touch to the seniors' summer spiritual life, making their leisure time enjoyable and fulfilling. Over 30 such events have been held so far this summer, serving over 1,200 seniors. Regular visitor Uncle Wang remarked, "It's too hot to go out in summer, and staying home alone is boring and lonely. Coming here every day to chat with old neighbours, do crafts, and watch movies is both cool and lively. Life feels so much better."

Micro-services warm the heart, and good health is found at the doorstep. Moving forward, Caojiadu Subdistrict will continue to practice the "embedded" and "zero-distance" philosophy of elderly care. By closely aligning with the seasonal characteristics and the needs of seniors, the subdistrict will persistently optimize its service list and refine its service measures. Focusing on the small matters of the elderly, they will make heartwarming care services more practical and detailed, ensuring that local seniors can age in place securely, peacefully, and happily, enabling them to safely navigate the summer and enjoy a comfortable twilight life.
