Metaplanet, Japan's first publicly listed Bitcoin financial company, announced on Monday that it had purchased an additional 1,000 Bitcoins, making it the second-largest publicly traded corporate holder of Bitcoin in the world, behind only the United States-based Strategy (formerly known as MicroStrategy).
The Tokyo-headquartered company bought 1,000 Bitcoins net during the third quarter, bringing its total holdings to 44,000 Bitcoins as of September 30, worth approximately $3.7 billion. During the quarter, Metaplanet sold 10,000 Bitcoins and purchased 11,000 Bitcoins, resulting in a net increase of 1,000 Bitcoins in its holdings. The sales were intended to boost confidence in its "creditworthiness" and broaden its access to "future financing."
Bitcoin now constitutes the primary portion of the assets on Metaplanet's balance sheet. Following this latest purchase, the company's Bitcoin holdings rank second only to Strategy, which firmly holds the top position with as many as 848,000 Bitcoins, valued at more than $6.9 billion.
Metaplanet's Bitcoin holdings far exceed those of some large U.S.-listed companies, including SpaceX, Tesla, and Coinbase. Often referred to as "Asia's version of Strategy," Metaplanet is currently entering the U.S. market through a transaction aimed at establishing a new publicly listed Bitcoin treasury platform. The deal is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The company is under pressure amid the Bitcoin bear market, with its share price down 28% year-to-date. Metaplanet's total market value, including debt and preferred shares, has fallen below the value of the Bitcoins it holds.
