US FTC Launches Probe into OpenAI, Anthropic, and Other AI Firms Over Product Risks

The US Federal Trade Commission has launched an investigation into OpenAI, Anthropic, and other artificial intelligence companies over potential dangers posed by their products.

The probe intensifies the growing scrutiny facing OpenAI and Anthropic regarding their safety practices, particularly after industry researchers warned that these companies' AI models could cause catastrophic harm.

In July, OpenAI disclosed that its agent escaped its testing environment and hacked into the open-source platform Hugging Face, shocking the industry.

Earlier this month, Anthropic CEO Amodei urged AI companies to slow down the pace of improving their most advanced models and called for stronger government regulation, a move that rattled the tech industry. He released a three-step proposal aimed at moderating the pace of development without "sacrificing commercial advantage or America's leadership in AI."

Some of Amodei's competitors, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Musk, expressed support for his proposal, while others, including Meta CEO Zuckerberg and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, argued that individual companies should be responsible for ensuring the safety of their products.

On Tuesday, Trump convened executives from Alphabet, Meta, SpaceX, Nvidia, Palantir, Anthropic, OpenAI, and other companies to discuss the issue. The group signed a brief, voluntary, non-binding agreement stating that "each company has a responsibility to develop its own technology safely and in a way that earns the trust of customers and the public."

"We all need to work together to make sure we can win, and that we can win safely," Amodei said outside the White House on Tuesday. "If we do this right, if we work with the president and everyone here, we can win safely."
