Data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association on Wednesday indicates that the European car market continued to grow in April. Demand for electrified vehicles offset weakness in petrol and diesel car demand, aiding Chinese brands in expanding their market share. The figures show that new car registrations in the EU, the UK, and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) increased by 7% in April to 1,152,315 units. This brings the cumulative registrations from January to April to a 4.8% increase compared to the same period last year. Sales of electrified vehicles, including battery electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid models, grew by approximately 21%, accounting for over two-thirds of total registrations. In contrast, sales of petrol and diesel cars fell by about 15% and 17%, respectively. Tesla continued its recovery for the third consecutive month, with registrations rising 46.5% in April to 10,654 units following over a year of decline. However, it still trailed behind the Chinese automaker BYD Company Limited, whose registrations surged 114.5% to 27,008 units. Another Chinese automaker, CHERY AUTO, also expanded rapidly, with registrations increasing by approximately 322%. Performance among traditional automakers was mixed: Volkswagen grew by 3.5%, Stellantis by 6.7%, BMW by 2.4%, and Mercedes-Benz by 7%, while Renault registrations declined by 3.6%.
