China Medical System Holdings Limited (CMS, 00867) announced that on 4 March 2026, its self-developed innovative drug INHBE-targeting small nucleic acid drug CMS-D008 injection received approval from the National Medical Products Administration for clinical trials in overweight or obese individuals.

CMS-D008, administered by subcutaneous injection, targets and reduces the hepatic expression of the INHBE gene, lowering the level of Activin E protein. Preclinical studies indicated that CMS-D008 efficiently and sustainably suppressed INHBE expression, effectively reducing fat mass while retaining lean muscle in diet-induced obesity models. According to the announcement, this mechanism differs from that of GLP-1RAs, potentially providing prospects for high-quality, long-term weight management with a favorable safety profile.

The announcement cited global data projecting overweight and obesity to affect 3.00 billion adults worldwide, while the number of overweight or obese adults in China is projected to reach 515.00 million by 2030. CMS-D008 will be developed for overweight/obesity and related metabolic conditions, with potential synergy alongside the company’s GLP-1R/GCGR dual agonist CMS-D005. The goal is to drive effective and sustainable weight loss outcomes, leveraging CMS’s existing cardiovascular and metabolic networks to accelerate R&D and future commercialization of these products.
