Market Overview
The Hang Seng Index (HSI) started the final trading day of August on a cautious footing, sliding 0.64% to 25,420.63 after giving back 164 points. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index (HSCEI) dipped 0.55% to 8,444.08, while the Hang Seng Tech Index eased 0.42% to 4,585.61 as investors weighed mixed global cues and lingering rate concerns.
Despite the broader softness, mainland property developers staged a sharp rebound led by China Vanke’s double-digit surge. Select construction names also found buyers, but the session was marred by heavy selling in gold miners after a pull-back in bullion prices. Large tech counters traded mixed, limiting any meaningful upside for the benchmarks.

5. Opening Summary
The Hang Seng Index slipped 0.64% out of the gate as sentiment stayed risk-off ahead of key U.S. inflation data, keeping the benchmark in the mid-25,000 range. HSCEI and the Tech Index posted similar modest declines, indicating a broad but orderly pull-back.
Large-cap tech showed a mixed picture. Meituan’s 2.5% rebound offered some support after recent weakness, while Alibaba and JD.com edged higher. Semis weighed on the sub-index, with SMIC and Hua Hong Grace both lower. Tencent, still the index heavyweight, eased just under 1%.
Property developers stole the spotlight following reports of incremental policy support on the Mainland. China Vanke spiked more than 8%, lifting peers Longfor and Seazen. Infrastructure plays such as China State Construction and Sany Heavy Industry also benefited from the policy bias toward pro-growth spending.
On the downside, gold miners tumbled in concert with a retreat in bullion prices; Zijin Gold International skidded over 8% and several peers followed suit. No notable IPOs debuted this morning, and traders are watching for guidance from afternoon macro headlines before taking bigger directional bets.
