Rogers Communications Inc. (RCI) experienced a significant pre-market plunge of 5.15% on Wednesday following the release of its second-quarter financial results.

The telecommunications company reported a net loss for the quarter, primarily due to a substantial accounting charge of C$1.03 billion related to its obligation to purchase the remaining stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. This resulted in a reported loss of C$1.37 per share. On an adjusted basis, which excludes exceptional items, earnings were C$1.15 per share, slightly above analyst expectations.

While the company's total revenue showed growth and exceeded forecasts, the reported net loss triggered investor concern, leading to the sharp pre-market decline. Rogers recently announced its plan to acquire the final 25% portion of MLSE for C$4.35 billion, gaining full control of the valuable sports business that includes teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors.
