How a Small County Transformed Its Marathon into a Premier International Event

Ren Shou County has successfully developed its half marathon into one of China's top-tier county-level racing events. On March 15, the 2026 National Half Marathon Championship and the 9th Meishan Ren Shou Half Marathon commenced, attracting 20,000 participants from home and abroad.

According to data from the Ren Shou County Education and Sports Bureau and Commerce Bureau, the event welcomed 142,000 visitors. Hotel occupancy in the urban area reached 100%, with accommodation consumption in surrounding towns and districts increasing by over 70%. The turnover rate for popular restaurants hit 80%, and county-wide catering revenue grew by 15% year-on-year.

Originally a local race, the Ren Shou Marathon has risen to become one of only two World Athletics Platinum Label half marathons in China, standing alongside events in Xiamen and Shanghai. The key to its success lies in its reputation as a "fast course." This year, the event attracted over 256,000 applicants for just 20,000 spots, with an overall selection rate of only 4.68%.

The course, known for enabling participants to achieve personal bests, features an average altitude of 406 meters, 99.5% straight paths, and minimal elevation change. This year’s route adopted a large-loop design with wider turns, allowing runners to maximize speed. According to event operator Bojie Sports, the race achieved a World Athletics score of 9,579 points in 2026, with 4,626 runners finishing under 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Beyond the course, the event’s Platinum Label status has significantly boosted its commercial appeal. Sponsors increased from just a few in the first edition to around 30 this year. In 2025, the marathon generated 320 million yuan in consumer spending for the county. This year, the local government issued 1.5 million yuan in consumption vouchers covering dining, shopping, and tourism, while partnering with over 400 merchants to offer participant discounts.

However, many county-level marathons struggle with financial sustainability. Industry experts point to盲目跟风 (blindly following trends) and lack of distinctive planning as common pitfalls. According to Wang Yanfa, General Manager of Chengdu Shangpao Sports, a successful marathon must combine unique local characteristics with broad public engagement.

Li Houqiang, a provincial policy advisor, suggests that counties should focus on strategic positioning—emphasizing local strengths over scale. He also highlights the importance of professional event management, industrial integration, and community involvement to ensure long-term success. While the Ren Shou Marathon has set a strong example, challenges remain in areas such as capacity management, price control, and balancing elite competition with mass participation.
