According to estimates from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), August national new energy passenger car manufacturer wholesale sales reached 1.3 million units, representing a 24% year-over-year increase and 10% month-over-month growth. Cumulative wholesale sales from January to August totaled 8.93 million units, up 34% compared to the same period last year.

Based on the August new energy passenger car wholesale sales rankings released by CPCA, BYD topped the list with sales of 371,501 units, Geely Auto ranked second with 147,347 units, and Tesla China followed closely with 83,192 units.

To guide healthy industry development, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, together with multiple departments, has deployed measures to further regulate competition in the new energy vehicle industry, strictly controlling malicious price-cutting behaviors and guiding the industry to shift from price wars to "value competition" focused on technological upgrades and service quality improvements. Manufacturers have actively responded to this call and adjusted their competitive strategies accordingly. Promotions have been extremely stable in recent months, with the fuel vehicle market maintaining promotional levels at 22.9% in August, down 0.5 percentage points from the previous month and up 0.9 percentage points year-over-year. August new energy vehicle promotions rose to a medium-high level of 10.7%, up 2.5 percentage points year-over-year and slightly up 0.5 percentage points month-over-month.

The stimulating effect of the national "dual new" policy subsidies has been outstanding, with market momentum continuing to strengthen after the Spring Festival. The trade-in subsidy program was particularly strong in some regions during the first half of the year, while funding pressure increased in the second half. Many provinces have made detailed arrangements for fund usage plans across different sectors and time periods, optimized subsidy distribution mechanisms, and implemented more refined execution strategies to ensure smooth and orderly policy implementation. Market growth further decelerated in August.

With recent electrification breakthroughs by major automakers and the launch of some popular new models, August saw structural high growth in the automotive market. Manufacturers including Geely Auto, Leapmotor, Dongfeng Motor, XPeng, NIO, Dongfeng Nissan, and GAC Toyota achieved record-high new energy wholesale sales for any month in their history in August, while Great Wall Motor and FAW Hongqi also delivered excellent performance with second-highest monthly sales records. Many second-tier automakers performed exceptionally well, boosting overall new energy vehicle sales.

According to CPCA data, the combined sales of manufacturers with monthly new energy wholesale sales above 10,000 units accounted for 91.7% of total new energy passenger car sales in July 2025. Based on early summary data, these manufacturers with July new energy wholesale sales above 10,000 units achieved sales of 1.19 million units in August. Although many companies took high-temperature holidays, most manufacturers have essentially locked in their sales figures. Therefore, based on the previous month's structural proportions combined with current month data, estimated August national new energy passenger car wholesale sales reached 1.3 million units.
