BioNTech SE shares plummeted 5.59% in pre-market trading following the release of its first-quarter results and a major restructuring announcement.
The German biotech firm reported a net loss of €531.9 million for Q1 2026, widening from a loss of €415.8 million in the same period last year. Revenue fell sharply to €118.1 million from €182.8 million year-over-year, reflecting the continued decline in COVID-19 vaccine sales.
Concurrently, BioNTech announced it will exit operations at several sites, including CureVac's facilities and its own locations in Idar-Oberstein, Marburg, Tuebingen, and Singapore. The closures are expected to affect approximately 1,860 jobs, with German sites ceasing operations by the end of 2027 and Singapore operations ending in the first quarter of 2027. The company also confirmed the full transfer of its COVID-19 vaccine production to partner Pfizer during 2026.
