The founder of well-known chain restaurant group TAI HING GROUP, Chan Wing On, has passed away at the age of 66.
TAI HING GROUP announced on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that its founder, controlling shareholder, and board chairman, Chan Wing On, passed away peacefully on November 24.
The group stated that Chan had made invaluable and significant contributions to the company's development and success over his 36 years of leadership, demonstrating exceptional vision and wisdom. He also actively served society by holding public roles in various organizations, promoting reforms in the catering industry. The board, senior management, and employees expressed deep respect and gratitude for his dedication.
Currently, the official website of TAI HING GROUP has turned monochrome, displaying a tribute message: "In solemn mourning, we remember Mr. Chan Wing On forever."
The obituary reads: "We mourn the passing of our founder and chairman, Mr. Chan Wing On, and honor his outstanding contributions to the company’s establishment and growth. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and pledge to uphold his vision and mission moving forward."
According to the company’s profile, Chan had over 30 years of experience in the catering industry and expanded TAI HING GROUP through a multi-brand strategy. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace by the Hong Kong SAR government in 2020 and served as chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants & Related Trades and honorary president of the Hong Kong Smart Catering Association.
Founded in 1989 in Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong, TAI HING GROUP started as a single Hong Kong-style roast meat fast-food restaurant. Under Chan’s leadership, it grew into the largest self-operated casual dining group in Hong Kong, with over 200 outlets across Hong Kong, mainland China, and Macau.
Beyond its flagship brand "Tai Hing," the group expanded its portfolio through self-creation, acquisitions, and licensing, including brands like "Min Hua Bing Teng," "Cha Mu," "Ah Chun Chicken Rice," and "Kau Kee."
On November 25, TAI HING GROUP announced that Chan’s son, executive director Chan Ka Keung, would succeed as board chairman, nomination committee chairman, and remuneration committee member. Chan’s cousin, executive director Chan Suk Fong, was appointed vice-chairperson, effective immediately.
Chan Ka Keung joined the group in 2009 and became an executive director in July 2025. He oversees brand strategy, product promotion, and digital transformation. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from De Montfort University and serves as vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants & Related Trades.
