Customer Alleges Significant Weight Loss in Gold Necklace After Repair at Shanghai Jewelry Store

A recent report has highlighted a dispute involving a gold necklace that reportedly lost a substantial amount of weight following a repair.

A customer, Mr. Hu from Ningbo, purchased an 87-gram gold necklace in 2019 when the gold price was 320 yuan per gram. On June 19, he took the necklace to the Shanghai Laomiao Gold store on Nanlei Road in Yuyao, Ningbo, for repairs. Mr. Hu claimed that after the repair, the necklace was noticeably shorter than before and, upon weighing, was found to be only 75 grams.

Mr. Hu stated that he brought the necklace in for repair after noticing a slight crack. He admitted he did not have it re-weighed before the repair and left the store in a hurry. It was only after returning home that he discovered the significant shortening and weight loss, which he found alarming.

In response, the owner of the Laomiao Gold store in Yuyao emphasized that the repair process on the workbench took only a minute or two. Regarding the failure to re-weigh the necklace beforehand, the owner cited an oversight, explaining that the necklace was already broken at the clasp when the customer presented it. After clamping and soldering it back together in the customer's presence, no other operations were performed.

According to the report, the jewelry store acknowledges that the necklace was originally purchased from their store with a weight of 87.03 grams. They confirm it was not re-weighed during the repair on June 19. When Mr. Hu returned to the store on June 23, the necklace weighed 75.67 grams. The discrepancy of over 11 grams led both parties to involve the police.

When contacted about the incident, a staff member at the involved store stated that the matter is unrelated to their outlet. The staff member suggested the customer was attempting to extract money and indicated that the relevant details had been clarified and reported to the headquarters, which would provide a formal response.
