The global leader in consumer electronics is preparing to pass on some of the rising costs driven by the AI boom to its customers. According to a report, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that due to persistent price increases for memory and flash storage, the company can no longer fully absorb these costs, making future product price hikes "inevitable." However, specific timing, magnitude, and affected products have not yet been determined.

Separately, a Bloomberg report cited sources indicating that the second-generation iPhone Air, internally codenamed V62, has entered an advanced internal testing phase and is expected to be announced in spring 2027. The new model will retain the current ultra-thin design while adding an ultra-wide camera and improving battery performance. Apple is also adjusting its iPhone release cadence to more evenly distribute revenue and sharpen its competitive edge against rivals like Samsung.

The AI Boom and Rising Memory Costs

The surge in demand for AI servers is straining the supply of memory chips for the consumer electronics sector. Tech giants are competing for HBM and high-end DRAM chips, leading suppliers to prioritize data center clients.

Cook remarked that this represents one of the most severe supply-demand imbalances he has witnessed in four decades. He noted that while Apple has the financial resources to support its supply chain, it is not considering building its own memory chip factories.

Analyst firm TechInsights estimates that rising memory and flash storage costs alone could add over $140 to the bill of materials for the next high-end iPhone. To maintain current profit margins, Apple may need to increase prices for future generations of its products.

Second-Gen iPhone Air Details: Dual Cameras and Battery Focus

Prototypes of the second-generation iPhone Air are reportedly in advanced internal testing. Sources indicate a key upgrade will be the addition of a second rear camera, moving from a single-lens to a dual-camera system with ultra-wide capability.

Internally, Apple views camera performance and battery life as the two areas most in need of improvement for the current Air model, with its single-camera setup being a frequent point of user feedback.

Approximately six months later, in spring 2027, Apple plans to launch the standard iPhone 18 alongside the upgraded second-generation iPhone Air.

Subsequently, in fall 2027, the company is expected to introduce two 20th-anniversary edition iPhones and a second-generation foldable model. Previous reports suggest the anniversary editions may feature a four-sided curved screen design that extends the display area to the edges.

Strategic Role of the Air and the Push for Balanced Growth

The current $999 iPhone Air boasts one of the thinnest profiles in the smartphone industry, but this design necessitates compromises on hardware found in Pro models, particularly in camera capabilities and battery life.

However, Apple executives believe the Air series holds distinct value within the product portfolio. The company's hardware chief, set to succeed Cook as CEO next year, has stated the Air helps further differentiate its product lines, catering to users who prioritize portability and design over the full suite of Pro features.

Analysts note that a phased release strategy helps Apple achieve more balanced revenue throughout the year and compete more effectively with Samsung, which typically launches flagship products at multiple points in the year rather than a single quarter.

With the debut of a foldable iPhone, anniversary editions, and the ongoing evolution of the Air series, Apple is gradually transitioning from its traditional "one major event per year" model to a new cycle of continuous updates throughout the year. For the tech giant, navigating rising cost pressures in the AI era while sustaining growth through diverse product forms and more frequent releases is becoming a core strategic focus for its iPhone business in the coming years.
