Ads Everywhere! Sogou Input Method Accused of Being "Outrageously Aggressive"

Recently, several prominent internet influencers have criticized Sogou Input Method for its increasing number of ads, calling it "outrageously aggressive." Complaints include persistent pop-up ads even after uninstallation and unintentional downloads of unrelated apps.

Users have also voiced frustrations in comment sections, with one stating, "Sogou has become unbearable—its input method forcibly bundles PDF tools and file decompression software, even altering right-click menus." Long-time users lamented, "Sogou treats users' computers like a chaotic marketplace, cluttering them with ads and ruining the experience."

In response to inquiries, Sogou Input Method's customer support suggested disabling pop-up ads via the "Wangzai Assistant" settings. However, the company did not address why ads have surged recently or provide an official statement.

Additionally, Sogou has faced backlash for allegedly "secretly altering browser settings." Reports indicate that the input method modifies homepage and search engine defaults on browsers like Edge and Chrome, sparking further user dissatisfaction.

High-profile critics include auto reviewer Han Lu, who has 8.89 million followers. He posted on Weibo, "Sogou Input Method is shameless—I uninstalled it, yet ads still pop up in the corner of my screen!" Another user noted that ad intrusions, ranging from skin recommendations to game promotions, have worsened recently.

Independent tech blogger Lu Songsong also complained, "Sogou’s ads are overwhelming now. Even typing triggers ads." He acknowledged the need for monetization but warned that excessive ads—some impossible to close—risk alienating users and driving them to competitors.

Sogou’s ad strategy primarily involves two types: 1. **Skin Recommendations**: Ads prompting users to purchase or switch input method skins. 2. **Third-Party Ads**: Promotions for e-commerce, news, and games.

Behind these issues lies Sogou’s struggle to balance profitability and user experience. Industry insiders explain that input methods like Sogou monetize indirectly—through search redirects, app installations, and ad placements. For example, typing "apple" may trigger a paid search result.

Despite leading with a 42.3% market share (per iResearch), Sogou faces pressure from rivals like Baidu and iFlytek, which leverage AI features to grow. Post-Tencent acquisition, Sogou must accelerate monetization while competing against WeChat, Baidu, and iFlytek input methods.

However, user tolerance for ads is low. A Sina Finance poll revealed that over 95% of respondents reject ads in input methods. Given its role as a gateway to the digital world, Sogou must find subtler monetization approaches to retain users and stay competitive.

The challenge for Sogou lies in reducing intrusive ads while exploring sustainable revenue models—key to maintaining its market position without alienating its massive user base.
