This achievement marks the completion of the final critical gap in the full mechanization of corn seed production.
This missing piece has constrained the seed industry for years. Gansu stands as China's core corn seed production region, consistently supporting nearly half of the nation's corn seed output. However, the harvesting of parent corn plants has long depended heavily on manual labor, presenting persistent challenges such as high workforce demands, low operational efficiency, elevated collection costs, and tightly compressed harvest schedules. During peak harvest periods, seed companies routinely face the triple dilemma of labor shortages, rising labor expenses, and the urgent need for timely harvesting. Complex procedures, intense physical labor, inconsistent harvest quality, and non-standardized operations have long hindered the industry's path toward large-scale, standardized development. This bottleneck has not only slowed efficiency but also impeded the modernization of China's seed industry as a whole.
How does one machine clear the final hurdle? The newly unveiled 4QZ-1 model, developed jointly by Jiuquan Okai Seed Machinery Co., Ltd. and Gansu Agricultural University under Gansu's industry-research integration technology initiative, is the country's first self-propelled specialized unit designed for the integrated harvesting, chopping, and collection of parent corn rows. Technically, the machine employs a multi-stage hydraulic system for precise, wide-range adjustment of the header position, enabling it to align with tall, densely planted parent rows. It efficiently chops the removed parent plants and precisely conveys them to a rear-mounted collection bin, achieving a fully integrated harvest-and-storage operation. Field test data shows an operational efficiency of 10 to 15 mu per hour, a collection rate exceeding 95%, and the ability to replace 20 to 30 manual laborers.
What does this breakthrough signify? Industry experts note that this successful development and field validation fills a critical gap in China's mechanized collection and storage technology for parent corn plants. It effectively completes the full mechanization loop for corn seed production—from female to male parent lines and from planting to harvest and storage. The final bottleneck in seed industry equipment has been overcome. During the demonstration event, additional equipment was showcased, including an 8-row high-clearance self-propelled detasseling machine, a compact 4-6 row detasseling machine, and an unmanned detasseling machine. This achievement represents the fruits of collaborative innovation among government, industry, academia, and research institutions, and marks a significant milestone in Gansu's transition from following to leading in seed industry equipment.
The significance extends far beyond a single machine. The seed industry serves as the "chip" of agriculture, and agricultural machinery equipment forms the core support for seed industry modernization. Driven by the national strategy to build an agricultural powerhouse, investment in the agricultural machinery sector grew 11.5% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, the fastest among 14 machinery industry sub-sectors. In July, the China Agricultural Machinery Market Sentiment Index (AMI) reached 52.7%, returning to expansion territory after two months. From the first rebound in the large and medium tractor market in three years, to a 30.14% year-on-year surge in corn harvester sales, to first-half agricultural machinery exports reaching $11.55 billion—a 24.1% increase—the industry is emitting powerful signals of comprehensive recovery. The breakthrough in the corn seed parent harvester-collector serves as a defining milestone within this recovery—filling not just a technological gap, but also reinforcing China's confidence in achieving self-reliance and control over its seed industry.
