AI Firm Knowledge Atlas Initiates Major Share Placement to Raise $4 Billion

AI company Knowledge Atlas is capitalizing on a significant surge in its share price to launch a substantial equity placement.

Since its initial public offering in Hong Kong this January, Knowledge Atlas shares have soared by approximately 1500%. Reports indicate the company aims to raise around $4 billion through this offering, selling roughly 19.8 million shares at a price range between HK$1588 and HK$1698 per share. This represents a discount of up to about 13% compared to Wednesday's closing price. China International Capital Corporation is acting as the sole global coordinator for the placement.

Allocation of Proceeds

According to the placement terms, Knowledge Atlas intends to use the net proceeds for research and development, business expansion, strategic investments, and merger and acquisition activities. The funds will also be used to optimize the company's capital structure, supplement working capital, and for other general corporate purposes.

On the product front, Knowledge Atlas recently launched its flagship AI model, GLM-5.2. The company has made this technology freely available as open-source software, a strategy aimed at attracting developers to its platform and integrating its tools into the global marketplace.

Hong Kong's Tech Financing Momentum

The placement by Knowledge Atlas is part of a broader wave of fundraising by technology companies in Hong Kong. The move to swiftly raise capital after an IPO mirrors a similar path taken by other major firms, such as the battery maker which completed a roughly $5 billion placement this past April. That company had also conducted a similarly sized placement in May of the previous year, which was one of the world's largest equity financings at the time.

Concurrently, terms documents show that another semiconductor company is seeking to raise approximately $850 million in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, a different AI chip firm has already completed a new share placement raising about $900 million, though its stock price declined following the deal.

The concentrated fundraising efforts by multiple Chinese AI and semiconductor firms on the Hong Kong market highlight the strong investor appetite for the country's technology sector. It also underscores a widespread desire among these companies to utilize the current window of high valuations to bolster their financial resources.
