Tensions have sharply escalated in the Middle East's critical energy corridor.

Multiple explosions were reported near Kharg Island, Iran’s key oil export hub, according to Iran’s Fars news agency on the 5th. The report noted that no smoke or flames have yet been observed in the vicinity of the affected waters.

Additionally, Iran’s Noor news agency, citing local sources, reported that an Iranian tanker near Kharg Island was struck by a missile fired by the US military.

The attack comes after a series of intense military exchanges between Washington and Tehran in the same waters. With retaliatory strikes escalating back and forth, the Strait of Hormuz—a vital artery for global crude shipments—now faces its most severe security test since the conflict began in late February.

Intensifying Maneuvers at an Energy Chokepoint

The strike unfolded on the morning of the 5th in the waters off Kharg Island, located near the Strait of Hormuz.

Preliminary reports indicate multiple blasts were heard, though no visible smoke or fire has been confirmed in the area. Efforts to evacuate crew members from the affected tanker are currently underway, with no casualty figures reported so far. The full extent of the damage remains unclear, as official statements have yet to be released.

As a strategically vital global energy passage, the Strait of Hormuz has been a central focal point for negotiations and friction between Washington and Tehran since the Iran conflict erupted in late February.

Just a day before the tanker incident, Tehran allegedly launched anti-ship missiles at vessels transiting the strait. Iranian media, however, did not disclose specific target details or the resulting impact of that action. Such frequent moves against maritime traffic continue to elevate the risk premium for shipping in the region.

Spiraling US-Iran Confrontation

Over the past week, direct military clashes between the US and Iran have entered a cycle of escalation.

Last Sunday, US forces struck Iranian rocket launchers positioned within the strait. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) described the operation as a "limited and precise action" against Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) mine-laying units, claiming they posed an "imminent threat" to shipping lanes.

In response, the IRGC confirmed a strike on Larak Island and vowed retaliation, subsequently launching attacks on US bases in the Middle East. Following that, CENTCOM forces executed another round of strikes on Tuesday, targeting IRGC air defense positions, mining equipment, radar systems, maritime assets, and communication sites. US officials stated the action was in response to recent IRGC attempts to assault commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
