Data from Japan's Ministry of Finance, based on preliminary portfolio flow figures, reveals that overseas investors offloaded a combined ¥4.03 trillion in Japanese government bonds during June and July, marking the sharpest two-month net outflow since early 2023.
Tuesday's report shows June sales totaled ¥2.4 trillion, with an additional ¥1.63 trillion sold in July. The June figure was partly inflated by quarterly bond maturities and redemption payments.
During July, Japanese investors trimmed holdings of U.S. and Italian sovereign debt while increasing allocations to German and French government bonds.
