Urban Outfitters (URBN) stock plummeted 5.32% in Thursday's trading session, despite reporting earnings that beat analyst estimates. The sharp decline comes as the company warned of potential margin pressures due to increasing tariffs, which could lead to price hikes for customers.

During its earnings call, Urban Outfitters reported impressive financial results, with net sales reaching $1.50 billion, up 11% from the same period last year. Earnings per share rose to $1.58, compared to $1.24 in the previous year. The company also projected high single-digit sales growth for the current quarter, with its subscription service Nuuly expected to lead the growth.

However, the positive earnings report was overshadowed by concerns over the impact of tariffs on the company's margins. Urban Outfitters imports most of its clothes from India, Vietnam, and Turkey, with less than 5% coming from China. Recent changes in the tariff landscape have significantly increased rates, with India facing 50% tariffs, Vietnam 20%, and Turkey 15%. As a result, the company estimates that the impact on gross margins for the second half of the year could be approximately 75 basis points.

Frank Conforti, Urban Outfitters' co-President, stated that the company is exploring mitigation strategies, including negotiating with vendors, shifting production to different countries, and adjusting shipping methods. However, he also mentioned that the company would be "gently raising prices" to offset some of the tariff impacts. This news has likely contributed to the stock's sharp decline as investors worry about potential effects on consumer demand and overall profitability.

The stock's plunge comes despite several analysts raising their price targets for Urban Outfitters following the earnings report. This divergence between analyst optimism and market reaction highlights the significant weight investors are placing on the tariff concerns and their potential long-term impact on the company's performance.
