U.S. President Donald Trump announced via social media that the U.S. Navy will immediately begin blocking all vessels attempting to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz. The blockade will also target ships paying transit fees to Iran in international waters, while U.S. forces will work to clear naval mines laid by Iran in the strait.
Trump stated that Iran had previously pledged to keep the Strait of Hormuz open but failed to honor its commitment. He emphasized that Iran "knows how to resolve the current situation."
Following the announcement, crude oil prices surged by 5% in after-hours trading.
