Market Overview

The Hang Seng Index opened soft at 24,523.50, easing 0.96% as risk appetite cooled following overnight weakness on Wall Street. The China Enterprises Index (HSCEI) slipped 1.13% to 8,172.50, while the Hang Seng Tech Index tracked the broader pull-back, down 0.99% to 4,318.17. Early dealings show a cautious tone, with profit-taking in heavyweight Internet names offsetting pockets of strength in selective biotech counters.

Biotechnology stocks provided a bright spot after several positive clinical updates, while consumer-facing online platforms also found buyers. In contrast, large-cap Internet and gaming names retreated, dragging on the tech gauge. Gold miners and semiconductor equipment makers also came under pressure alongside weaker commodity prices and a tepid overnight Nasdaq print.

Opening Summary

Hong Kong equities started the session on the back foot, with the Hang Seng Index sliding nearly 1% toward the 24,500 handle as investors reacted to overnight softness in U.S. tech shares and lingering concerns over global growth. The HSCEI and HSTech indices mirrored the weaker sentiment, down over 1% and just shy of 1% respectively.

Large-cap Internet names led the retreat: Alibaba, NetEase and JD Health each dropped around 2% or more, while Tencent, Meituan and Xiaomi also traded in the red. The selling pressure across platform and gaming names accounted for the bulk of the tech index’s decline.

Still, select biopharma names bucked the trend. Genscript Bio surged more than 6% after announcing upbeat R&D progress, and DualityBio added over 3%. Content platform China Literature and educator-turned-e-commerce play East Buy also advanced, suggesting continued interest in digital consumption and health-care themes.

Commodity-linked counters were soft, with SD Gold and China Gold International sliding alongside a dip in spot bullion, while semiconductor bellwether ASMPT weakened. No new IPOs debuted this morning, but traders remain alert to a pipeline of tech and healthcare listings in the fourth quarter.
