OpenAI has launched "ChatGPT for Financial Services," a specialized tool designed for investment bankers and equity researchers. This move marks the company's latest effort to compete with rival Anthropic PBC for corporate clients and broaden the adoption of artificial intelligence across the enterprise sector.
Announced on Thursday, the product integrates data from providers such as Daloopa, PitchBook, and LSEG News, and operates on OpenAI's newest GPT-6 Astra model. The service is also set to incorporate future AI model updates from the company as they become available.
Nick Turley, OpenAI's Vice President of Product, stated: "We are essentially teaching ChatGPT to conduct research in the manner of an analyst, and to substantiate its conclusions with the rigor of one."
When questioned about whether this innovation could reduce hiring for entry-level banking roles, Turley framed it as a productivity-enhancing instrument rather than a cause for job cuts. He remarked: "I believe that, similar to how Microsoft's Excel transformed the industry by enabling faster and superior analysis, you will see this type of technology have the same impact."
Targeting Major Financial Institutions to Accelerate Enterprise Expansion
OpenAI is primarily aiming this tool at large-scale financial institutions. The product aligns with the company's ongoing strategy to increase its share of corporate clients, a segment that offers significantly higher profit margins compared to the consumer users who have long formed the majority of its customer base.
Sarah Friar, Chief Financial Officer of OpenAI, mentioned during a Goldman Sachs conference in San Francisco this week that the company's enterprise and consumer businesses have recently reached a near-parity point.
The "ChatGPT for Financial Services" dataset will include content such as earnings call transcripts, financial statements, and fundamental company data. The tool features granular citation capabilities, allowing teams to trace data and conclusions back to their original sources for verification.
According to OpenAI, this feature is designed to facilitate more efficient and streamlined research, financial modeling, and the creation of client materials that adhere to each institution's unique formatting standards.
