Stock Track | Cisco Pre-Market Plunge 5.28% as Strong Earnings and AI Orders Fail to Meet Lofty Market Expectations

Cisco Systems shares tumbled 5.28% in pre-market trading on Thursday, extending a sharp reversal that began in the after-hours session Wednesday. The decline came despite the networking giant delivering a fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report that handily beat analyst estimates, underscoring that in the current AI-driven market, simply exceeding forecasts is no longer enough to sustain a rally.

The company posted adjusted earnings of $1.22 per share on revenue of $17.3 billion, both above Wall Street's consensus estimates of $1.17 and $16.8 billion, respectively. Cisco also provided a significantly raised outlook, forecasting first-quarter revenue between $18.0 billion and $18.2 billion, and full-year fiscal 2027 revenue of $72.2 billion to $73.4 billion, well ahead of analyst projections. AI infrastructure orders from hyperscale cloud providers reached $4 billion in the quarter, bringing the full-year total to $9.3 billion. Despite these robust figures, the stock initially surged nearly 8% in after-hours trading before reversing course and sliding into negative territory.

The sell-off was driven by a combination of factors. First, Cisco's stock had already rallied more than 60% year-to-date, setting a high bar that left little room for disappointment. Second, some analysts and investors viewed the company's AI revenue guidance of $7.5 billion for fiscal 2027 as conservative relative to the strong order pipeline, raising questions about the pace of future conversion from orders to recognized revenue. Finally, a slight contraction in gross margins and an overall crowded AI trade prompted profit-taking, as traders opted to lock in gains after the stock's substantial run-up. The market's reaction highlights that in the current environment, companies must not only beat estimates but also demonstrate sustained acceleration capable of surpassing already elevated expectations.
